Many people growing up wanting to be a lawyer, perhaps it is the thrill of convincing people that you are right or the idea of proving people innocent when they have been accused of something. In reality becoming a lawyer is incredibly hard and those like Jonathan Bunge who have achieved it and gone on to great success like he has as one of the best lawyers in the whole of Chicago, have achieved such success through hard work and dedication. Before passing the bar and going on to be a lawyer however, you first need to get into law school and with fierce competition and high requirements, you will need to ensure that you not only have the skills to earn your place, but also the commitment to the profession. In order to get your place at a law school here are some of the things that you need to be doing.
Focussing on your GDP
With such competition, law schools want only the best candidates studying with them, this means that you must work very hard on maintaining a high GPA. The median requirement GPA score to get into law school is 3.42 and higher tier schools have even stricter requirements so if you wish to get your place at law school then your GPA needs to be high. Your GPA is an average and you can’t afford to start poorly and pick up the slack later on, you must be studying hard and achieving high grades from the start to finish of your studies.
Pick the Right Major
When it comes to your undergraduate degree it is important to pick the right major to look attractive to law schools. Majors such as philosophy, history and journalism are good choices to make, they require a lot of reading, writing and arguing, which is exactly what you will be doing in your role as a lawyer. Studying prelaw is not a requirement and many law schools don’t pay much attention to this so don’t fall into the trap of thinking that this will form the perfect path to law school.
Look Out For Extra-Curricular Activities
Law schools look very kindly on those who have created opportunities for themselves to gain experience and knowledge and extracurricular activities are the best way to achieve this. The best thing that you can do for your education and ultimately your career in law is to try and take on a summer internship at a law firm. Not only will law schools be impressed that you have dedicated your own time to getting experience in the industry but the knowledge that you gain will give yo a step up the ladder when it comes to your education. If you can get an internship then you need to be like a sponge and absorb all of the information and skills that you see during your time there. Try to seek out a mentor who can help you to learn the ways of the industry.
